How to join CobbleShine

CobbleShine runs Cobblemon, which is a mod, so you join with our free modpack. It takes about five minutes the first time.

Option 1: Modrinth App Recommended

  1. Install the free Modrinth App and sign in with your Microsoft account (the one that owns Minecraft).
  2. Download the CobbleShine 1.4.1 modpack (a small .mrpack file).
  3. In the Modrinth App, press + (Create instance), choose From file and pick the file you downloaded.
  4. Set the memory to 4 GB before you press Play (see Memory below). The app's default is often only 2 GB, and that isn't enough.
  5. Press Play. The first launch downloads a few hundred MB of mods, so give it a few minutes.
  6. Click Play CobbleShine on the title screen, or open Multiplayer and double-click ✦ CobbleShine (it's already in your server list).

Option 2: Prism Launcher

  1. Install Prism Launcher and add your Microsoft account.
  2. Download the CobbleShine 1.4.1 modpack.
  3. Click Add Instance, then Import, and choose the file.
  4. Set the memory in Edit › Settings › Java (tick Memory, then set Maximum memory allocation to 4096 MiB).
  5. Launch the instance and join play.cobbleshine.net from Multiplayer.

Memory: set 4 GB (the default is often 2 GB)

Cobblemon packs need much more memory than vanilla Minecraft. On most 8 GB laptops the Modrinth App gives the game only 2 GB by default (it does that whenever the computer reports a little under 8 GB, which most "8 GB" laptops do). With 2 GB, CobbleShine is likely to crash or freeze while loading.

Give it 4 GB (4096 MB). If your computer has 16 GB or more, 6 GB (6144 MB) is plenty. In the Modrinth App:

  1. Open Library and click the CobbleShine instance.
  2. Click the gear button (Settings) next to Play.
  3. Open the Java and memory tab.
  4. Tick Custom memory allocation and drag Memory allocated to 4096 MB.
Illustration, not a screenshot. Step 1: the gear button next to Play on the CobbleShine instance. Step 2: the Java and memory tab. Step 3: the Custom memory allocation checkbox, ticked. Step 4: the Memory allocated slider set to 4096 MB.
A drawing of where the setting is, not a real screenshot. Labels can differ a little between app versions.

In Prism Launcher it's under the instance's Edit › Settings › Java. The modpack file can't set memory for you: every launcher keeps it as its own setting.

Troubleshooting

Pressing M opens a map instead of my Pokémon

In CobbleShine, M belongs to Cobblemon (your Pokémon summary) and the world map is on N. If you used an older version of the pack, your old key settings were kept. Open Options › Controls › Key Binds, find Xaero's World Map and set it to N.

"Incompatible client" or "mod rejections" when I join

You're on the wrong version or without the modpack. Join from the CobbleShine instance, not the normal Minecraft launcher or the Cobblemon Official Modpack. The server needs Minecraft 1.21.1 with Cobblemon 1.8.1 and the mods in our pack.

I already have the Cobblemon Official Modpack. Can I use that?

No. The official pack has moved to Cobblemon 1.8.2 while CobbleShine runs Cobblemon 1.8.1, and it lacks mods the server needs, such as Mega Showdown, Raid Dens, Rad Gyms and CobbleDollars, so it can't join. Install the CobbleShine pack as its own instance (see above); your other instances and worlds stay as they are.

I use CurseForge, the normal Minecraft Launcher or TLauncher

CurseForge and the Minecraft Launcher can't install our pack. Use the free Modrinth App instead: it takes two minutes and you sign in with the same Microsoft account. TLauncher and other cracked launchers can't join: CobbleShine needs a paid Minecraft: Java Edition account.

"Unknown host" or "Can't resolve hostname"

Check the address: play.cobbleshine.net. If it still fails, restart your router or try again in a few minutes.

The game crashes or freezes while loading

Almost always it's memory: the Modrinth App often starts you on 2 GB. Raise it to 4 GB, or 6 GB if your computer has 16 GB or more (see Memory above), and close Chrome and other big programs while it loads. The launcher picks the right Java for you; Cobblemon needs Java 21.

Low frame rate

Shaders are off by default; leave them off on older computers. Lower Render Distance to 8 in Video Settings. That's what the server uses anyway.

Can I play on Bedrock, console or phone?

No. Cobblemon is a Java Edition mod, so CobbleShine needs Minecraft: Java Edition on a Windows PC, Mac or Linux computer. If you play Minecraft on a Windows PC, you very likely own Java Edition already (Minecraft for PC comes as "Java & Bedrock Edition"): open the Minecraft Launcher and choose Java Edition. Only on phone or console? Come say hi in our Discord, where every shiny caught on the server is posted.

Can I add my own mods?

Only mods that don't give an advantage, such as performance mods, shaders and zoom. X-ray, fly, auto-clickers, macros and similar clients get you banned. See the rules.

Does it cost anything?

No. CobbleShine and the modpack are free. You need your own copy of Minecraft: Java Edition. Optional supporter ranks are cosmetic; see Ranks & store.
